Position Summary
At the Toronto Design Centre, our Product Development teams provide solutions to our customers through the design and development of AC-DC and DC-DC power supplies. In this role, you will:
- Support a Principal or Senior Level Engineer/Designer or lead a Power Supply development project or sub-project of small to medium complexity from kickoff through to manufacturing introduction.
- Have an opportunity to grow toward a Senior/Principal Design or Engineering Management position
Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Receive complex design guidance or approaches from Principal or Senior level engineers.
- Ensure the technical integrity of the design.
- May interface with the customer to communicate technical information.
- May supervise the work of technologists working on the project
- Where applicable, ensure that the design conforms to corporate engineering procedures.
- Where applicable, ensure the design is documented according to ISO9001 procedures.
- Where applicable, ensure the design meets cost, performance and schedule requirements.
- Perform schematic entry, calculations, simulations, & bread-boarding in the design process
- Implement microcontroller firmware and hardware for power management/control functions in power supplies.
- Design circuits and perform tests and evaluations for design verification & integrity
- Must keep him/herself up to date with innovations and trends in Power Electronics.
Education
Experience Required
- Minimum 5 years of experience in high frequency power supply design
- Experience in switching power supplies AC/DC, DC/DC with various topologies (Full-Bridge,Half-Bridge, Forward, Boost, Flyback, Soft Switching, Bridgeless PFC, synchronous rectification, current sharing, etc.) and knowledge in resonant converter such as LLC, LCC converters.
- Experience with Wide band Gap devices like SiC and GaN devices and their application in power electronics circuits.
- Experience in design and optimization of magnetic components like transformers and Inductors for power electronics.
- Experience in Analog circuit design (Analog circuit with transistor Level, Op-Amp, D/A, A/D, interface with micro-controller, sensing techniques and calibration)
- Theoretical and experience in Control theory Techniques, Z-transformation, and digital control systems for power electronics application. Familiarity with control algorithms, such as PID, and their implementation in microcontrollers for closed-loop regulation and stability in power supply designs.
- Experience with the use of, MATLAB, MathCAD and PSPice simulation tools
- Experience in designing systems to meet product safety and EMC requirements (e.g. grounding, etc…)
- Experience in electronic packaging (high density SMT, PCB layout techniques, planar transformers, EMI, thermal)
- Hands-on experience in product development activities: bench instrumentation, soldering parts, bread-boarding and testing circuits.
- Familiarity with product qualification requirements
- Knowledge of embedded design and microcontroller as it applies to power supply design shall be considered an asset.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Physical Requirements
- 90% of time sedentary – working at desk and workbench
- 5% of time lifting, carrying equipment – maximum weight 25 pounds
- 5% of time working in confined spaces (racks/chambers)
Work Environment
This position is an on-site role, with one flex day per week of remote work.
