Design Sustaining Engineer/Specialist

Position Summary

At the Toronto Design Centre, our Product Development teams provide solutions to our customers through the design and development of AC-DC and DC-DC power supplies. In this role, you will be responsible of identifying and qualifying alternate components, providing support to component engineer, and processing other design related sustaining engineering work.


Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Identify alternate source for critical components
  • Qualify identified alternate components
  • Process component EOL and PCN
  • Solves problems with components and AVL information
  • Evaluate design engineer’s component requests
    • Suggest the use of existing parts (when possible)

For new components

    • Extract parametric information for the requested components
    • Determine RoHS status of components
    • Obtain supplementary information from component manufacturers
    • Evaluate similarity of components for manufacturers listed on the request
    • Suggest alternate manufacturers when match is not satisfactory
    • Enforce corporate and site component selection rules
  • Populate corporate component data base and site CAD component data base
  • Manage site CAD component data base to
    • facilitate component search
    • facilitate selection of preferred components
    • achieve the goal of a minimum size component data base
  • Serve as resource for sustaining issues related to electrical components
  • Work with quality engineers, offsite manufacturing, electrical engineers, component vendors.



  • Knowledge of active and passive electronic components used in power converters
  • Knowledge of industry and quality standards related to components
  • Knowledge of power converter topologies, control theory, magnetics, EMI, etc.
  • Proficient in computation and circuit simulation techniques such as MathCAD, PSpice, and SIMPLIS
  • Ability to gather and analyze data and determine root cause of component problems
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of internal and external customers

Bachelors in Electrical Engineering

Experience Required

    • Engineer = PEO Licensed
    • Specialist = Degree OR Equivalent Work Experience
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in power supply product development
