Manufacturing Test Engineer

Calex Manufacturing Inc., which was acquired by Murata Power Solutions in 2018, has been in business for more than 50 years, designing and manufacturing DC-DC power converters for automotive, transportation and industrial applications. In recent years, Calex has been developing products for emerging markets such as drones, autonomous driving, hybrid and electric vehicles, in addition to the legacy products.

Calex is located in beautiful Northern California, approximately 50 miles north of San Jose and 30 miles east of San Francisco. Our corporate facility is in the city of Concord which is within easy commute distance of affordable housing, a rare trait for the Bay Area.

Position Summary

In the Testing Engineer role, you will:

  • Provide project engineering and technical support for power products, including project test development, alternative development, equipment selection, construction oversight, environmental oversight, and other activities required as a full service for test development.
  • Analyze data derived from pilot scale runs that are intended to identify test plan and specification problems before products are released to contract manufacturing. Lead projects spanning several departments and cross-functional areas.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Design ATE, burn-in, and life test solutions for power products.
  • Development of CHROMA Test Program as per Design requirement
  • Review program proposal or plan to determine scope, time frame, funding requirements, risk management, procedures for accomplishing program, and available resources in various phases of program.
  • Direct and coordinate activities of required support areas to ensure program accomplishes technical scope objectives on schedule and within the prescribed budget.
  • Design and implement new test solutions that meet both manufacturing and customer requirements.

Job Duties/Responsibilities Cont.

  • Provide technical leadership to other test engineers and test development for manufacturing.
  • Oversea and coordinate product characterization activities and resources when required.
  • Initiate product and test specifications changes based on qualification results.
  • Acts as liaison between test engineering and engineering.
  • Handle equipment replacement and upgrades.
  • Prepare work instructions, procedures, and test plans.
  • Prepare reports, charts, and diagrams to disclose results and highlight areas for further improvement.
  • Be able to de bug issues to determine if it is Test or Manufacturing Issues
  • Prepare required reports pertaining to accomplishments, project status, and new objectives.

Education

Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent education and/or experience.
    • Engineer = PEO License
    • Designer = Engineering degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2 – 4 years’ experience in test system development.
  • Sound knowledge of engineering theory and design criteria.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Familiarity with Statistical Process Controls and Statistical Sampling techniques.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation communication such as RS485, RS232, and IEEE-488.
  • Familiarity with NH Research and/or Chroma ATE systems is preferred.
  • Familiarity with programming such as Visual Basic, Ansi C, and LabView are a plus.
  • Familiarity with standard communication protocols such as SMBus, PMBus, and Modbus are a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • 60% time sedentary – at desk.
  • 5% exerting physically on the job, moving equipment and instrument setups
  • 30% at QATE or engineer bench, debugging test programs or setup.
  • Lifting – occasionally need to move/install equipment which may exceed 25 pounds – always need to use discretion to seek help for larger/heavy items.
  • Working in somewhat confined spaces at QATEs, equipment racks.

Work Environment:

  • While performing essential responsibilities, the employee regularly works near moving parts, is exposed to fumes or airborne particles and to toxic or caustic chemicals. Occasionally exposed to vibration and extreme heat. The noise level is usually moderate.
